A buoyant economy with over 9% GDP growth fueling the market, a home-grown industry living up to its expectations it’s dream economics. We in India are living that dream today, in which the Indian semiconductor industry is a vital contributor. The semiconductor-driven industry has grown into a prominent player in the past couple of decades. We, at India Semiconductor Association ISA, are proud and privileged to be part of this inspiring journey.

Semiconductors touch our lives at every level, and in the years to come, their impact will increase manifold. An immediate influencing factor is the boom in the electronics market that is pushing the demand for next-generation chip designing and manufacturing. ISA-Frost & Sullivan Reports 2006 established the size of the electronics and semiconductor market in the country and authenticated its growth potential. India scores high on all the factors that go into making the country a global hub for semiconductor design and manufacturing. The ISA-EY Benchmarking Study: India in the Global Semiconductor Design Ecosystem 2007 established India’s position in the global context. Undoubtedly, the electronics and semiconductor revolution is the next big thing to happen in the country after the information technology revolution.

The Indian semiconductor industry today represents every aspect of the semiconductor lifecycle, from cutting-edge EDA and VLSI design companies to an evolving manufacturing eco-system. The ISA membership profile stands testimony to this versatility. ISA members have a presence in all the major industry segments across design and manufacturing, including the eco-system of venture capitalists, academic institutions and legal firms. The increase in the membership of ISA is a reflection of the growth of the semiconductor industry itself.

In the past one year, ISA created value for its members through a range of activities that it organized. From management talks and technology updates for senior management to discussions on issues of interest to the industry and the market, ISA members had a power-packed events calendar. The interest in India as a destination for semiconductor design and manufacturing was evident from the participation of delegates from around the world at the ISA Vision Summit 2007.

Besides fostering growth, ISA has been committed towards creating a viable eco-system for the industry. The Semicon Policy 2007 that the Government of India announced recently has been a step in this direction. With adequate incentives, the industry will be able to build the right capabilities to join the big league and participate in this huge economic opportunity.

To build a robust and viable semiconductor industry in the country, ISA has been working towards creating a talent pool that is wide and highly scalable. ISA has taken on the task of bridging the divide between industry and academia through several focused initiatives. The semiconductor industry thrives on innovation and ISA’s talent initiatives are geared towards that.

In the years ahead, ISA would continue to play a pivotal role in the growth of the industry and strengthen talent and continue to build a competitive advantage for the country. Moreover, we expect to offer our members an even more rewarding experience through our round-the-year activities. The active involvement of the industry and the active participation of the Executive Council ensure that our initiatives are highly valued. ISA has profited immensely from the direction of its Chairmen Rajendra Kumar Khare (outgoing) and S. Janakiraman (incoming). The ISA Secretariat provides the support to execute our initiatives successfully.

Going forward, we look to increased participation from industry. The Government of India has recognized the need to nurture the industry through various incentives. With the support of the industry and the Government, we at ISA are committed to take the Indian semiconductor industry to the next level. This is the time for India and we are here to make it happen.

Like Jack Welch says, “Control your own destiny or someone else will.”
