Chairman PDF Print E-mail

Dear ISA members,

A month back you elected the new ISA Executive Council (EC). I am personally privileged to be part of this team that has such an outstanding calibre of leadership. We thank you for your kind support.

As we end our first month, I would like to take this opportunity to update you on the EC's key directions moving forward.

ISA member engagement and momentum across India

We have an ambitious agenda ahead to propel our industry forward with vibrant growth over the years ahead. But we can achieve this only through your active participation and valued ideas to drive this agenda forward.

ISA, to its advantage, draws upon a membership that's widely respected by one and all. This is a strength which we must actively leverage. Through current initiatives that each of us will take across the country, we have to work together and build a massive growth momentum. Please send an email (to me at chairman@isaonline.org,), Poornima Shenoy (at president@isaonline.org) or to the ISA EC at (isaec@isaonline.org) and let us know how you would like to play an active role in ISA initiatives.

Decision to form regional chapters - starting with NCR

As part of our objective to increase member participation across the country, the EC (in its very first meeting) took an important decision to have empowered regional chapters. Each chapter will drive activities that are relevant to the companies in the region. They will also add new members to our ISA fold. Our vision is to have multiple regional chapters over time. That, we feel, is the way to create a pan India wave in Electronic Systems Design & Manufacturing.

The first of these will be in the NCR region led by Jaswinder Ahuja, Corporate Vice President & Managing Director, Cadence Design Systems, for the first year (and through elections in the subsequent years). As we learn from this initial experience, we will incorporate the same as we open chapters in Hyderabad and Pune over the next 6 months. There are few other locations being considered by the EC as well. We are thankful to the core team of Jaswinder Ahuja (leader), Dasaratha Gude, Managing Director, AMD India, and Pravin Desale, Vice President and Managing Director, LSI India, for detailing the chapter mission & guidelines.

We also expect to have leaders for some of the ESDM Segments from these regions.

Enhancing continuous multi-way member interaction

Around the year, multi-way member interaction and communication will enrich ISA's ideas and actions. Towards these objectives, the EC has decided to take the following actions:

- Monthly email communication to all members from the ISA Chairman. This will include the directions/decisions by the ISA EC and summary of key monthly activities and events.

- Quarterly printed ISA newsletter circulated to members/stakeholders (led by Poornima Shenoy, President ISA). This will provide details of the activities of the CIGs, ESDM Segments, and member events.

- Creating an ISA value proposition document for all stakeholders (led by ISA Vice Chairman Dr. Pradip Dutta, Corporate Vice President & Managing Director, Synopsys). This can be of much value to our existing and new members.

- Creating a social networking media for members to exchange ideas (led by ISA EC member, Rajesh Mishra, Vice President, SEMI & Peripherals practice, Wipro). We will initiate the social media first for the discussion group for each ESDM segment and for the NCR regional chapter, and take it broader subsequently.

Accelerating the ISA Electronic Systems Design and Manufacturing Agenda

The immediate past EC identified and put together the Electronic Systems Design and Manufacturing (ESDM) agenda firmly on the radar. This year we will vigorously drive this agenda forward, architect the key tenets of this direction, and maniacally focus on execution of the same.

The reason we will focus on ESDM is that it has the powerful ability to pull-through the entire semiconductor ecosystem.

I will share some specifics of this agenda and our thought process with all of you.

The Semiconductor Core

Semiconductor is at the heart of electronics. Semiconductor design, test, EDA, embedded systems - working with Electronic Systems Design companies - can play a vital role in impacting the performance, power, cost, reliability etc. of the electronic products. Over the years, we have built a strong semiconductor foundation which gives us the confidence to not only strengthen it further, but also leverage it as 'The Engine' that will propel the growth of Electronics.

Electronics, and the ESDM Agenda

Prof. Sadagopan, Director of IIIT Bangalore, spoke in anguish recently: "When I look around, I see and sense the importance of Electronics getting eroded. Unless we reverse this trend, it will be scary for our future." Dr. Zarabi (former Director of SCL) also spoke eloquently about the same in a recent NCR ISA member interaction session.

We firmly believe that Electronics can change India!

Electronic Systems Design and Manufacturing (ESDM) is a great opportunity ahead of us. This opportunity has led ISA to identify Electronic Systems Design and Electronic Product Manufacturing as its core agenda.

We feel confident of this agenda because Electronic Systems Design is strength of India. There are well over a thousand companies (local and multinational) across multiple cities and towns of India who excel in Electronic Systems Design innovation. Electronic Product Manufacturing is also a critical area for our growth ahead.

Driving the ESDM segments

ISA is committed to driving this Electronic Systems Design and Manufacturing agenda across multiple segments stated below, along with the segment convener names:

Water Management

To be decided

Each of the ESDM Segments will be led by conveners, and will have a core leadership team. We expect several electronic systems companies/OEMs to also join us and be part of ISA in this endeavor, in addition to semiconductor companies. Their insights and close partnership with the semiconductor companies will help us accelerate our ESDM agenda. Please let Raghu Panicker, Sales Director India, Mentor Graphics, at Raghu_Panicker@mentor.com, who leads the Industry Outreach focus, know of companies that you feel can contribute to the ESDM agenda.

I am delighted to inform you that in our very first month, Nokia has become an ISA member and will actively participate in our activities - both in Systems Design and Systems Manufacturing.

I request you to play an active role in these ESDM Segments. The email-ids of the convener/co-convener for some of the ESDM Segments have been listed above, while that of the others will be given in the subsequent emails.

Other Core Initiative Groups (CIGs) are in the pipeline. We will keep you informed of the same in our subsequent communication.

Leadership in Energy Efficiency

Energy Efficiency leadership is a strategic opportunity for India. ISA will work on Energy Efficiency R&D, Regulations and Energy Management across all the segments above to make a lasting impact in Energy Efficiency. We will work with the Bureau of Energy Efficiency, Government of India, in this vector.

Inclusive Growth

Finally, we believe that Electronics can play a vital role in ensuring Inclusive Growth. Across domains like Healthcare, Education, Communications, Water Management, Energy Sources etc. ISA will look at ways by which Electronics can make a difference to the lives of hundreds of millions of people in our country by extending the access, quality and affordability.

The ISA Architecture

ISA will partner with the Government of India, other Industry bodies and Global partners as we drive the Electronics agenda.

This ISA architecture is pictorially represented below.
