| Growing Opportunities in Photovoltaics |
| Source: Adeline Ong, Nikkei Electronics Asia, August 2008 |

The semiconductor industry is global, and the trends which influence this industry are seldom
regional; and semiconductor firms, including those in Singapore, must be ready to
accommodate the rapid changes driven by an end-market where consumer products reign," said
Paul Davies, president of SEMI Singapore, and executive vice president of SEMI, in his keynote
speech at SEMI Singapore. For firms to remain competitive, he added, they need to be aware of
the latest trend: a growing interest in building clean and sustainable energy sources. And this is
where photovoltaics (PV) has been attracting interest. |

About 80 domestic companies (including joint ventures) in China are devoted to semiconductor
equipment research and manufacturing. Many of these domestic equipment manufacturers are
research institutes rooted in and/or transformed from military industrial entities with sales
limited to colleges and research institutions. With the emergence of the semiconductor
industry, however, a strong and viable equipment industry in China is desired to support and
supply the fabs based there. |

Few people have heard of the BYD Corporation — BYD for Build Your Dream — but this littleknown
company has grown into the world’s second-largest battery producer in less than a
decade of existence. Now it plans to make a great leap forward: “We’d like to make a green
energy car, a plug-in,” said Paul Lin, a BYD marketing executive. “We think we can do that.”
Even in go-go China, such lofty aspirations may sound far-fetched. But BYD has built a 16-
million-square-foot auto assembly plant here and hired a team of Italian-trained car designers;
it plans to build a green hybrid by the end of the year. |

| As some of Silicon Valley's biggest tech companies - especially chip makers - have recognized
the enormous potential in the solar industry, the battle for supremacy is taking on David vs.
Goliath proportions. So far, dozens of small, venture-backed solar start-ups - many based in the
valley - have been in the spotlight. But companies such as Intel, Applied Materials and National

Semiconductor intend to capture their share of the lucrative market. After all, these large
players aren't content to let start-ups control a photovoltaic solar industry projected to grow
from $20 billion in 2007 to $74 billion by 2017. |

| Despite the recent dent in automotive OEM's market expectations, semiconductor content in
light road vehicles is expected to enjoy a steady market growth through 2015, a Semicast study
finds. The global market for automotive semiconductors is forecast to grow from $20 billion in
2007 to just over $30 billion in 2015. This suggests the automotive sector accounts for 7 to 8
percent of the total available market. Continued semiconductor demand is expected in each of
the main areas of the vehicle such as powertrain, body electronics, comfort electronics and
infotainment. Since electronic components and electronically controlled subsystems
increasingly pervade the vehicles, the average semiconductor content per new light vehicle
will grow from around $295 in 2007 to $375 in 2015. |
