The EDA Consortium (EDAC) Market Statistics Service (MSS) announced that the electronic
design automation (EDA) industry revenue for Q1 2008 declined 1.2 percent to $1350.7 million
compared to $1366.8 million in Q1 2007. The four-quarter average growth rate, which
compares the most recent four quarters to the same four quarters in the prior year, was up 5.9
percent. |

Indian companies have invested in 75 projects in the United Kingdom during 2007-08, creating
3,846 jobs, a British High Commission release today said. This is higher than investments by
Swedish, Chinese and Italian companies. A report by UK Trade and Investment, a UK
government organisation that helps overseas firms bring in investments, said Indian firms
accounted for one of the fastest growing sources of investment to the country, in sectors like
infotech and life sciences. |

| Funding strategies boost Hungary's startup environment |

Hungary's environment for growing R&D-focused ventures has significantly improved over the
last few years and the country expects a pickup in startup activity, according to Csaba Zoltan,
head of Start Tokegarancia, an equity guarantee organization in Budapest. Hungary produces
each year 50-100 startups that would be of interest to VCs, he estimates. |

Research Corp. and Applied Materials, Inc. to advance NAND flash memory technology. NAND
flash is one of the most rapidly evolving technologies today, enabling a large variety of
portable electronic devices from media players to navigation systems to solid-state drives for
laptop computers. This international research effort is focused on providing breakthrough
technology that can lead to a broad range of significantly smaller and more powerful portable
electronic devices in the next five years. |

| Fab Projects Yet To Get Subsidy Clearances |

India's much-hyped fab story seems to be dragging its feet. While about 10 investment
proposals worth over $7.8 billion have been submitted to the centre for approval, the threeman
appraisal committee set up to review the semiconductor fab projects is yet to clear any of
them. The clearances may in fact be put off till mid-2009. According to sources, the committee
headed by M Madhavan Nambiar, special secretary of department of information technology
and set up in September, 2007, was supposed to evaluate the proposals and decide on who
would get subsidies from the government by April, 2008. |

The top 100 branded electronics firms consumed semiconductors worth $209 billion in 2007, or
76 percent of all chips sold last year, according to market research group Gartner. The top
application areas remain data processing (37 percent) and communications electronics (28
percent), which between them represented almost three-quarters of the semiconductors
consumed by the top 100 OEM firms. |

Taiwan's share of the growing notebook market is expected to continue slowly rising. But
systems makers on the island nation face challenges such as the transition to LED backlights
and the need to expand their overseas markets. At least 15 companies in Taiwan currently
design and make notebooks for major brand name companies. Two of those former no-name
manufacturers—Acer Inc. and Asustek Computer--have established significant notebook
businesses under their own brands, thanks in part to their close ties to the many key
component suppliers in Taiwan. |

end IT solution for the health sector in the country. Intel will join hands with Hyderabadbased
Karishma Software Ltd for Jeeva - its integrated healthcare information system for
hospitals with bed capacities between 40 and 240. Jeeva will cost between US$ 57,921-150,568
with Intel providing the hardware along with the Chinese PC maker Lenovo, while Karishma will

| Intel has invested €24 million (about $37.5 million) into Berlin-based solar module
manufacturer Sulfurcell GmbH. The company produces monolithic solar modules that feature a
high efficiency. The move is part of Intel's clean tech investment strategy. Intel's investment
that is executed via the company's VC unit Intel Capital. The microprocessor vendor is the
largest single investor in Sulfurcell. The current financing round allocates a total sum of €85
million. |

Applied Materials' SunFab Thin Film Line, and will use the gear to establish its first photovoltaic
(PV) module production facility. The line ordered by privately held Moncada will produce large
5.7m2 single junction PV modules at a facility in Campofranco, Sicily, and is expected to have
an annual rated capacity of 40MW. |

| Semiconductor R&D and engineering costs are rising at a faster rate than IC sales, according to
a new report from IC Insights. R&D and engineering expenditures increased at a compound
average growth rate (CAGR) of 12.7 percent between 1990 and 2007, while semiconductor sales
grew at a CAGR of 9.9 percent in the 17-year period. In 2007, IDMs, fabless and pure-play wafer
foundries spent a total of $45.7 billion on R&D and related engineering activities, up 8 percent
compared to $42.5 billion spent in 2006, according to IC Insights. |
