The EDA Consortium (EDAC) Market Statistics Service (MSS) announced that the electronic design automation (EDA) industry revenue for Q1 2008 declined 1.2 percent to $1350.7 million compared to $1366.8 million in Q1 2007. The four-quarter average growth rate, which compares the most recent four quarters to the same four quarters in the prior year, was up 5.9 percent.

Wireless customers' base rises by 11.75 per cent in March 2008 quarter

Wireless market in India expanded by 11.75 per cent with 27.45 million new subscribers for the Jan-March 2008 period. The total wireless subscriber base hit 261.07 million in the mentioned quarter, taking the total telecom customer base to 300.48 million.

Indian firms bet big on UK

Indian companies have invested in 75 projects in the United Kingdom during 2007-08, creating 3,846 jobs, a British High Commission release today said. This is higher than investments by Swedish, Chinese and Italian companies. A report by UK Trade and Investment, a UK government organisation that helps overseas firms bring in investments, said Indian firms accounted for one of the fastest growing sources of investment to the country, in sectors like infotech and life sciences.

CK Prahlad, Nilekani in PM’s council on skill development

Management guru CK Prahlad and Infosys’ Nandan Nilekani have been included in the newly reconstituted Prime Minister’s national council on skill development, the apex body to guide activities in the field. Chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the council will have ministers of HRD, finance, heavy Industry and public enterprises, rural development, housing and urban poverty alleviation, labour and employment and the chairperson of the national manufacturing competitiveness council as its members.

Funding strategies boost Hungary's startup environment

Hungary's environment for growing R&D-focused ventures has significantly improved over the last few years and the country expects a pickup in startup activity, according to Csaba Zoltan, head of Start Tokegarancia, an equity guarantee organization in Budapest. Hungary produces each year 50-100 startups that would be of interest to VCs, he estimates.

IIT-Bombay works with SRC, Applied for NAND flash

IIT-Bombay has recently entered into a collaborative research program with Semiconductor Research Corp. and Applied Materials, Inc. to advance NAND flash memory technology. NAND flash is one of the most rapidly evolving technologies today, enabling a large variety of portable electronic devices from media players to navigation systems to solid-state drives for laptop computers. This international research effort is focused on providing breakthrough technology that can lead to a broad range of significantly smaller and more powerful portable electronic devices in the next five years.

Fab Projects Yet To Get Subsidy Clearances

India's much-hyped fab story seems to be dragging its feet. While about 10 investment proposals worth over $7.8 billion have been submitted to the centre for approval, the threeman appraisal committee set up to review the semiconductor fab projects is yet to clear any of them. The clearances may in fact be put off till mid-2009. According to sources, the committee headed by M Madhavan Nambiar, special secretary of department of information technology and set up in September, 2007, was supposed to evaluate the proposals and decide on who would get subsidies from the government by April, 2008.

Indian technology companies facing cost pressures from a global economic slump and domestic competition are seeking a way out by boosting R&D investments to develop semiconductor intellectual property. Top 100 OEMs said to take 76% of semis shipped

The top 100 branded electronics firms consumed semiconductors worth $209 billion in 2007, or 76 percent of all chips sold last year, according to market research group Gartner. The top application areas remain data processing (37 percent) and communications electronics (28 percent), which between them represented almost three-quarters of the semiconductors consumed by the top 100 OEM firms.

Taiwan reaches for larger slice of notebooks

Taiwan's share of the growing notebook market is expected to continue slowly rising. But systems makers on the island nation face challenges such as the transition to LED backlights and the need to expand their overseas markets. At least 15 companies in Taiwan currently design and make notebooks for major brand name companies. Two of those former no-name manufacturers—Acer Inc. and Asustek Computer--have established significant notebook businesses under their own brands, thanks in part to their close ties to the many key component suppliers in Taiwan.

PC-makers plan big on models made for India

Made-for-India models with unconventional designs and attractive prices are increasingly becoming a focal point for leading computer-makers, who see growing demand for such products among business users. The latest to join the bandwagon with a low-cost model is Hewlett Packard (HP) with its Dx2009 or Mini DT business desktop. The Mini DT has been priced at Rs 12,500 sans the monitor and is 92% smaller than a conventional desktop.

Dreamworks to use Intel technology for 3-D movies

DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc plans to use chips from Intel Corp for the creation of 3-D movies, the companies said on Tuesday. DreamWorks will use Intel's visual computing products for 3-D animated feature films starting with its "Monsters vs. Aliens" movie, set for domestic release on March 27, 2009, it said.

Conexant acquires SigmaTel lines

Conexant Systems Inc. has acquired SigmaTel Inc.'s multi-function printer (MFP) imaging product lines from Freescale Semiconductor Inc. Conexant (Newport Beach, Calif.) will also acquire SigmaTel's digital photo frame product lines, which allow users to view and share photos from traditional digital cameras, camera phones, and photo-sharing Web sites on highresolution LCD displays.

Technopark initiative in Kasaragod

Giving shape to its first regional incubation centre, the Thiruvananthapuram Technopark has formed an Entrepreneurship Development Cell (EDC) and a Virtual Technology Business Incubator at the LBS College of Engineering in Kasaragod. The IT park’s Technopark Business Incubation (TBI) centre would be offering support to the engineering college for coordinating the effective conduct of the Entrepreneurship Development Activities thus maintaining the status of a Regional TBI in the state, a Technopark official said.

Intel to invest US$ 40 billion in partnership with Indian IT companies

Intel Corp will invest US$ 40 billion in partnership with Indian IT companies to create an endto- end IT solution for the health sector in the country. Intel will join hands with Hyderabadbased Karishma Software Ltd for Jeeva - its integrated healthcare information system for hospitals with bed capacities between 40 and 240. Jeeva will cost between US$ 57,921-150,568 with Intel providing the hardware along with the Chinese PC maker Lenovo, while Karishma will provide the software.

Singapore: Applied Materials Plant

The microchip equipment maker Applied Materials said it would spend $60 million to $70 million building a plant in Singapore to make semiconductor equipment, part of a plan to expand its Asian manufacturing. Intel invests in thin film solar manufacturer Sulfurcell

Intel has invested €24 million (about $37.5 million) into Berlin-based solar module manufacturer Sulfurcell GmbH. The company produces monolithic solar modules that feature a high efficiency. The move is part of Intel's clean tech investment strategy. Intel's investment that is executed via the company's VC unit Intel Capital. The microprocessor vendor is the largest single investor in Sulfurcell. The current financing round allocates a total sum of €85 million.

Update: TranSwitch buys Centillium for $42M

TranSwitch Corp. (Shelton, Conn.) stuck an agreement to acquire Centillium Communications, Inc. for an estimated $42.8 million in stock and cash. TranSwitch is betting the deal can make the two small and somewhat struggling telecom chip makers into one larger company with stronger prospects.

Italian group enters PV module market

Italian alternative energy group Moncada s.r.l. (Aragona, Sicily) has become the latest to order Applied Materials' SunFab Thin Film Line, and will use the gear to establish its first photovoltaic (PV) module production facility. The line ordered by privately held Moncada will produce large 5.7m2 single junction PV modules at a facility in Campofranco, Sicily, and is expected to have an annual rated capacity of 40MW.

Ms. Liu’s role as general manager of the China plant is significant as she is the first female member of Elcoteq’s local management team to head a plant in China, one of the emerging markets in the mobile phone industry. She joined Elcoteq in 1999 and worked as product line manager for the mobile phone business for more than 6 years, then served as operations manager for 2 years.

Semiconductor R&D expenditures rising faster than revenues, says IC Insights

Semiconductor R&D and engineering costs are rising at a faster rate than IC sales, according to a new report from IC Insights. R&D and engineering expenditures increased at a compound average growth rate (CAGR) of 12.7 percent between 1990 and 2007, while semiconductor sales grew at a CAGR of 9.9 percent in the 17-year period. In 2007, IDMs, fabless and pure-play wafer foundries spent a total of $45.7 billion on R&D and related engineering activities, up 8 percent compared to $42.5 billion spent in 2006, according to IC Insights.

Gartner lowers capex forecast

It's official: The IC-equipment market is in a downturn right now. But will the fab-tool market recover in 2009? Amid a slump in the IC industry, Gartner Inc. has once again lowered its 6 capital spending forecasts for 2008. Capital spending--and the fab equipment markets--are expected to decline even more than originally thought in 2008.
