Addressing the 2nd India Cleantech Forum, in New Delhi, on July 10, 2008, John McCarthy, the Australian High Commissioner to India said that Australia and India were on the verge of a great economic partnership. At the same forum, Chris Greenwood, Director of New Energy Finance, UK, revealed that investments in the clean technology sector would reach a rate of US$ 10 billion per week by 2030. He was presenting the enormous growth opportunities in new investment areas of clean technologies and renewable energy like solar and wind technology, and bio-fuels amongst others. He further added that several clean technologies needed heavy engineering and there was a demand supply gap which hiked the cost of these technologies. He reiterated that energy infrastructure in developing countries should be developed with low cost, decentralised solutions.

Semiconductor companies, which made computers and other electronic devices ubiquitous, now are setting their sights on solar power. In the past few months, just about every major company in the semiconductor business has joined a rush into the solar industry, paving the way for what industry observers predict will be cheaper, better and more efficient equipment for both consumers and businesses. Semiconductor companies think they can bring the type of precision technology and manufacturing techniques they perfected with computer chips to solar cells, both those based on silicon and other types.

India has come some way since it first started looking outward with economic reforms in the early 1990s. Although the path has been checkered with periods of slow progress, the country is now picking up steam. India's GDP growth rate averaged at only 5.4 percent in the 1980s, and about one percent higher in the 1990s. But for the fiscal year that ended in March, the economy grew 9 percent. The electronics sector shares this growth. Electronic hardware demand is estimated to grow from 1 percent to 12 percent of the GDP by 2015, and revenue from EMS and ODM operations is projected to grow from $774 million in 2004 to $2.03 billion next year.
