The applause may become deafening later but for now the investment market is giving the cold
treatment to the top executive change at Advanced Micro Devices Inc., perhaps in recognition
of the fact that Dirk Meyer's replacement of Hector Ruiz as CEO probably won't result in any
radical changes at the microprocessor vendor. |

Like a dog being happily wagged by its tail, Cypress Semiconductor announced record quarterly
earnings Thursday, with its SunPower solar division again leading the way. Cypress reported
$592.3 million in revenue for the quarter ending June 29, with 64.6 percent of that sum coming
from its SunPower business, the solar cell division that has established itself as a leader in the
booming clean-technology industry. The previous quarter, SunPower delivered 61.9 percent of
Cypress' $442.1 million in revenue. |

| Viewpoint: A potential 'jobs boom' in solar technology |
| Source: EETimes, July 18 2008 |
The recently published EE Times Venture Capital Scoreboard showed in quantitative terms the
rising investments in cleantech and photo-voltaic startups. Henryk Schoder, a director at a
MRL-Technology, a specialist recruitment consultancy focused on roles in the
semiconductor/solar technology field in key markets around the globe looks the potential for
employment. The global market for energy is, quite simply, enormous. We currently work our
way through 15,000 gigawatts a year (a gigawatt being the output of the largest of the current
coal-fired power stations) spending about a staggering $6 trillion in the process. But the fossil
fuels we depend upon to satisfy so much of this demand are either running out or threaten to
engulf us in uncontrolled climate change. Which is why the renewable energy sector has been
attracting so much interest and investment in recent years and is now predicted by the United
Nations’ environment programme to be worth as much as $600 billion by 2020. |

In an ominous sign for Silicon Valley’s entrepreneurial machine, venture capital firms are
cutting back on their investments in companies at their earliest stage of development and
being forced to provide extra financing for later-stage companies that can’t leave the nest and
go public. |

| India's tech industry running out of talent |
| Source: Joe Lazar, The Economic Times, July 21 2008 |
| http://economictimes.indiatimes.com |
|
Superior talent is the strength of all organisations and a key driver for India’s growth in the
technology sector. Unfortunately, almost two decades into India’s phenomenal growth as an
international centre for high technology, the industry has a problem. It’s running out of talent.
According to a recent McKinsey report, Indian universities churn out 400,000 new engineers
every year, but only 100,000 are ready to join the IT industry. For the semiconductor industry
in India, availability of ‘employable’ talent is even worse, especially for high-end technology
areas such as VLSI and embedded design. Companies in this domain need people with specific
skills. With India’s rising talent crunch, it will be a challenge to maintain the same competitive
edge that it offered in the past.

According to data from World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS), the global market for
semiconductors grew 9.2 per cent reaching Rs.87,910.79 crore ($20.53 billion) in May 2008.
This is considerably more than the three-month moving average for May published by the U.S.
Semiconductor Industry Association on June 30. |

If the first 13 years of mobile telephony in India has been about a stupendous growth story, the
next 13 could be about telcos having a major global footprint. It’s not as if Indian telcos have
not looked at overseas markets in the past. It’s just that Wireless India is now in top gear as far
as overseas forays are concerned. |

| Handsets on track for growth despite declining prices |
| Source: Dylan McGrath, EETimes, July 23 2008 |
| http://www.eetimes.com |
|
After jumping 16 percent in 2007, global mobile handset sales growth could top 10 percent in
2008, reaching nearly 1.3 billion units, according to projections from analysts and vendors. But
projected unit growth is being partially offset by declining average selling prices (ASPs).
Price declines stem from factors like the weak U.S. dollar and the popularity of lower-priced
handsets in emerging markets, where most of the unit growth is occurring. |

| India board design services to hit $458M this year |
| Source: K.C. Krishnadas, EE Times, July 24 2008 |
| http://www.eetasia.com |
|
Board design services in India are expected to grow to $458 million this year, driven by OEMs
handling multiple designs here for both the local market and overseas customers. Indian design
services companies said they have more overseas clients while the number of reference designs
for captive design centers operated by foreign chipmakers is also rising. According to the India
Semiconductor Association (ISA), of the 1,794 board designs completed in 2007, only 628 were
new, and the rest are modifications to existing designs. Of the estimated 2,274 designs
expected here in 2008, 805 will be new, said ISA president Poornima Shenoy. |

| Expect 10% chip market growth, says Penn |
| Posted: Peter Clarke, EE Times Europe, July 24 2008 |
| http://www.eetindia.co.in |
| Malcolm Penn, founder and principal analyst with Future Horizons Ltd, believes the market
forces are at last moving into place to deliver a couple of years of booming growth for the
semiconductor industry. Penn offers three possible results for annual chip market growth in
2008, ranging from 7 per cent at the low side up to 10 per cent growth at the top end.
He is convinced that, because of a lack of investment in semiconductor manufacturing capacity
at present, prices will continue to rise, alongside units in 2009, giving rise to a market growth
in the "high-teens" of per cent. |
