No question, the European chip industry already has seen better times. All suffer under the
same poor macroeconomic conditions and the adverse currency exchange rate. But some
perform better than others — and do not need to cut jobs by the thousands. |

| Chips provide a leg-up to revolutionise healthcare |

How would semiconductor chips help restore partial vision in a person born blind, you would
ask. Talk to Sham Banerjee, director, corporate business development, Texas Instruments (TI),
India, and he’ll tell you that TI is at present working with the University of California in this
regard . Research is on to implant semicon chips in the retinas of people suffering from total
blindness. A fair degree of success has been attained, as 7-8 implants have already been done
in patients and partial vision restored. The chip industry, which till now considered the
telecom and PC markets their biggest growth drivers are now taking the healthcare equipment
segment seriously. “The healthcare segment is the fourth biggest growth driver for the
semiconductor industry,” says Poornima Shenoy, president of India Semiconductor Association
(ISA). Infact, the ISA is hosting an ExCITE exhibition in Bangalore today which will showcase the
2
complete integrated technology system growth drivers for the Indian electronics industry.
The healthcare vertical will find special focus here as countries spend more and more on
healthcare equipment . US, for instance, spends about 16% of its GDP on healthcare, where
costs are expected to go up from $2 trillion in 2007 to $3.1 trillion in 2012. Chip makers are
fascinated by the growth in emerging countries like China where healthcare expenditure has
increased 227% during 2006-07 alone. |

The government of Karnataka will be announcing a semiconductor policy very soon, according
to Katta Subramanya Naidu, the minister for Excise, Information, BWWB, IT and BT,
government of Karnataka, while delivering the opening address at the ISA Excite organized by
the India Semiconductor Association. Over the last several years, India has been a destination
favoured by almost all leading global semiconductor companies for setting up their
development centers for semiconductors and embedded designs. |

Sprawling electronics empires like Sony, Matsushita, Hitachi and Toshiba have long been the
pride of industrial Japan, competing with each other to make everything from computer chips
to televisions. But now, facing increased competition from manufacturers in places like South
Korea, Taiwan and China, they are doing something that was previously unthinkable: working
together. |

| Indian economy to overtake UK in 10 yrs |
| Source: The Times of India, July 28 2008 |
| http://www.ibef.org |
|
Economic forecasts predict that India will overtake the UK and become the world's fifth largest
economy within the next 10 years, the third largest behind China and the US by 2025 and the
second largest economy after China by 2050. The number of Indian companies in the West
Midlands in UK has doubled since 2006. This year saw the biggest deal of all-Tata's acquisition
of Jaguar and Land Rover, which made it the largest foreign investor in the region, employing
over 13,000 staff. In a bid to forge more ties, an action plan has been put in place to seal new
business and academic ties between the West Midlands and India. |

Are we in a recession? Various analysts have different answers, but I'm not sure the question
really matters since these downturns are usually identified ex post facto. Calamity always
makes for good press, and nothing is more personal than the economy, so every downturn gets
examined like an oncologist studying a smoker's X-rays. Yet the unemployment rate in the US is
a relatively low 5.5%. |

The three-month moving average of global chip sales for June is estimated to have come in at
$21.4 billion up 7 percent from $20.0 billion in June 2007, according to Bruce Diesen, analyst
at Carnegie Research. However June's three-month average is set to be down from the $21.8
billion achieved in May 2008. Actual June chip sales probably rose 7.3 percent year-on-year in
dollar terms, Diesen said, compared to a 9.2 percent jump in May. |

| Taiwan is moving towards a major revision of the restrictions placed on local semiconductor
companies with regard to their investments in mainland China and is likely to remove many of
the hurdles they currently face, a senior government official said in an interview. The revision,
which is due in September, comes hot on the heels of the March election of Ma Ying-jeou as
president of Taiwan and mirrors his philosophy of freeing up restrictions on trade between the
two countries, said Chen Chao-yih, director general of Taiwan's Industrial Development Bureau,
in an interview in Tokyo on Tuesday. |

| Local designers drive Chinese IC market growth; |
| Source: Bolaji Ojo, EETimes, July 30 2008 |
| http://www.eetimes.com |
| Sales of semiconductor chips designed in China are surging at a double-digit clip helping to
offset slower growth in the country's previously red-hot IC market as OEMs focus on customizing
products for the local market, according to iSuppli Corp. Led by demand from the wireless
communications equipment sector, China's consumption of semiconductors designed in the
country is forecast to rise more than 60 percent by 2012 to $42.1 billion from $25.8 billion in
2007 while the entire IC market for the country will grow at a slower 7.7 percent rate, the
research firm said. |
