Continued from [Made in India] Competition Heating up in Solar-cell Market [Part 2].
If the thin-film silicon solar cell production line is established, Moser Baer Photo Voltaic Ltd
(MBPV) will increase its output of thin-film silicon solar cells to 40MW per year. Although the
company is slightly behind schedule due to heavy rain that delayed the plant construction, it is
advancing the installation and preparation of manufacturing equipment as planned. The line is
expected to ship its first product some time in June 2008, MBPV said. If the company later
employs the tandem structure to boost conversion efficiency, the plant's annual output will be
increased up to 60MW. |

| Source:Mark LaPedus, EETimes, June 19 2008 |
| http://www.eetimes.com |
The mid-year data looks somewhat gloomy in the IC and fab-tool industries. For example, IC
Insights Inc. has lowered its IC growth forecast from 9 percent to 7 percent in 2008. And in
other bad signs, the various fab-tool, book-to-bill ratios are way below parity. North Americabased
manufacturers of semiconductor equipment posted a book-to-bill ratio of 0.79 in May,
down from 0.82 in April, according to SEMI on Thursday (June 19). A book-to-bill of 0.79 means
that $79 worth of orders were received for every $100 of product billed for the month. |

Who's afraid of globalization? Of marauding Americans? Or an economic downturn? Not Indians,
for sure. The Pew Global Attitudes Survey 2008 shows that we welcome foreign investment
and trade. We are also one of the most confident countries amid the encircling More than
24,000 global economic gloom. And we want friendship with the US. people across 24 major
nations were asked earlier this year about what they felt on various issues, from economic
prospects to the US presidential elections to how major countries such as India, China and the
US are perceived. The overall mood in the world has got darker as economies run into trouble;
most continue to dislike the US, though its image is gradually improving; and the general belief
is that US foreign policy will improve for the better if Barack Obama becomes the next
president of that country. |

VLSI design services provided by companies in India brought in $760 million last year, rising to
$927 million in 2008, according to a study released last week by the India Semiconductor
Association. The ISA report said the U.S. market accounted for nearly 70 percent of the 2007
revenue. Europe is the next biggest buyer of design services from Indian firms, and Japan is
seen as a market with huge potential. The unique challenges Japan presents in terms of
language and managing relationships set it apart, but Indian design houses are starting to get
more projects from Japanese companies, the ISA said. |

|
It is not only spiralling fuel and material costs but also manpower costs that India Inc has had
to deal with in the financial year 2007-08. A study of 961 large corporates carried out by FE
reveals that their staff costs rose 24.1% in FY08 over the previous year and this is more than
the 18.6% growth in revenues. And, the rise is widespread as 90% of the companies in the
sample recorded an increase in employee costs. Staff costs have now started eating into
margins as well, as their share of the revenue is now 6.22% in FY08 compared with 5.94% in the
previous fiscal. However, traditionally staff cost-heavy sectors like IT and telecom have seen a
drop in the share such overheads in their total expenditure. |

|
The growth of the worldwide market for semiconductor intellectual property slipped back to a
single-digit percentage in 2007, reflecting signs of maturity, less organic growth and more
growth by acquisition, according to market research company Gartner. After three years of
double-digit growth rates, the market settled back to 8 percent growth during 2007, according
to the seventh annual semiconductor IP market share survey, conducted between February and
April 2008. The overall semiconductor IP market (including technology licensing and design IP)
is estimated at $1.9 billion in 2007. ARM lead the market with a revenue share of nearly 24
percent, followed by Rambus and MIPS Technologies. |

| Semiconductor industry dynamics will get worse before getting better |
| Source: Ann Steffora Mutschler, EDN, June 23 2008 |

Judging the health of an industry can be complex. For the semiconductor industry, one
indicator is the amount of manufacturing equipment sold, which fell by 37% year-over-year in
North America for the month of May. While some market research companies had been
expecting sales to pick up in the second half of the year, there are macro-economic issues at
play that suggest otherwise. Industry association Semiconductor Equipment and Materials
International (SEMI) reported last week that orders for semiconductor manufacturing
equipment continued sliding downward, approaching levels seen in 2005 – the last time the
semiconductor industry reported a year-over-year decline – as North America-based providers
of semiconductor manufacturing equipment posting $1.03 billion in orders in May on a threemonth
average basis. |

Worldwide investments in the production of photovoltaic (PV) cells will rise to the same level
as those for semiconductor manufacturing by 2010, due to booming demand for solar energy,
according to iSuppli. Global production of PV cells is expected to rise to as much as 12
gigawatts (GW) by 2010, up from 3.5GW in 2007. By 2010, as many as 400 production lines in
the world that can produce at least 1 Megawatt (MW) of PV cells per year will be in place,
representing a four-fold increase from about 90 to 100 production lines in 2007. Factories
capable of 1GW of annual PV production also will be established in the future to ensure
continued strong delivery of PV cells to the market. |

| Move towards developing IT products, says Kalam |
| Source: The Hindu, June 27 2008 |
|
Former President of India A.P.J Abdul Kalam said here on Thursday, that the country must
move from being a leader in Information Technology related services to excel in developing
indigenous IT products such as specialised software designed right here.
ISA awards Speaking after presenting the annual Technovation awards of Indian Semiconductor Association
(ISA), Mr. Kalam said, “The semiconductor policy announced by the Union Government last year
offers liberal concessions till 2010. This is encouraging because the semiconductor industry is
capital intensive and has to make products of exacting standards to meet global market
demands.”
Skill aplenty The former President suggested the example of other industry sectors like automobiles, which
showed Indian businesses could fast mature to attract venture capital from overseas. The fact
that 23 out of the top 25 semiconductor companies of the world had located development
centres in India showed that persons with skills were available here in large numbers. Our own
industries could attract the young workforce, potential researchers among them, he said.
On the research front, he said that the Defence Research and Development Organisation and its
labs had been engaged in semiconductor design for decades, for uses ranging from satellites to
railway traffic control. “We now have the technology to develop sub micron level chips and
enter a large market, estimated to reach $ 7.2 billion by 2011, as our IT sector grows,” he said.
J.M. Vasi, Deputy Director, Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay; Indian Institute of
Technology-Madras among institutions; and scientists and young researchers were presented
awards on the occasion. |
