| $50 Billion Telecom Deal Falls Apart |
Source:Heather Timmons, The New York Times, May 25, 2008 |
| http://www.nytimes.com |
The world's largest corporate deal in an emerging market, a tie-up worth nearly $50 billion
between two telecommunication companies, Bharti Airtel in India and MTN Group in South
Africa, came to a screeching halt Saturday. Bharti called off negotiations after MTN turned
Bharti's takeover plan upside down, proposing to take over Bharti instead. After bankers from
both sides agreed in principle to a Bharti-controlled structure on May 16, MTN's board met this
week and proposed a different transaction, in which Bharti Airtel would become a subsidiary of
MTN, Bharti said Saturday. |

| China, India to Lead Mobile Market by 2012, Says Ovum |
| Source:Nikkei Electronics Asia, May 26 2008 |
| http://techon.nikkeibp.co.jp |
|
"Connections are expected to reach 4.99 billion by 2012, with revenues growing to US$1,019
billion," according to Steven Hartley, senior analyst, Ovum. According to Ovum, emerging
markets are the engine of connection growth in the mobile market, and the next 4 years will
see that trend continue. "In particular, China and India will be the two single largest markets
on the planet by 2012, accounting for 31% of the world’s mobile connections," said Hartley. The
research firm forecasts that penetration will reach 64% in China and 55% in India by 2012,
meaning there will still be growth left in the market. |

| IT Propels Semiconductor Industry |
| Source: Business Standard, May 28 2008 |
| http://www.business-standard.com |
UK and Indian semiconductor industries share potential synergies in the areas of design, device
and applications, according to a study by the India Semiconductor Association (ISA), a trade
body representing the Indian semiconductor industry, the UK Trade & Investment (UKTI), and
Science & Innovation Network UK (SIN). "Indian and UK companies can collaborate to boost
India's IP creation and build next-generation products for the world," the study notes. Titled
‘Scope for collaboration between India and UK in semiconductor driven industry 2008', the
study notes that while Indian companies specialise in VLSI, hardware and board-level design,
besides embedded systems in wireless communication, computing and networking, the UK's
strength lies in IP creation and complete product development. |

Chip design outsourcing starts has grown by 20 per cent in 2007, according to a recent survey
by Gartner, Inc. The survey involved 62 vendors of integrated circuit design services, from
which it reported strong growth in designs of 90nm or below. In 2006, 29 design service
companies responded. The number increased to 62 last year, representing nearly 35 per cent of
all vendors worldwide, reported Gartner in its Semiconductor DQ Monday Report. |

Just a couple of days ago, I was expressing my delight at the growing global interest in the
Indian semiconductor industry. Close on it heels comes the initiative where the UK and India
seek each other's collaboration in that space! The India Semiconductor Association (ISA) and
the UK Trade & Investment and Science & Innovation Network has launched a study titled
"Scope for collaboration between India and the UK in semiconductor driven industry 2008". The
report was launched by Richard Hyde, head - British Trade Office, Bangalore and ISA chairman

India is all set to join the 13-member group of 'miracle economies' that have recorded higher
growth in a short span of time, says a UK-based think tank. In addition to India, Vietnam will
also be joining the club of these fast-growing economies, which among others include Japan,
Singapore and South Korea, the Commission on Growth and Development said. |

| Third World Telecom Moves to the Front |

The MTN Group, a small mobile operator in South Africa, attracted an investment in 1995 from
SBC, an American telecommunications company. Now MTN is a sprawling company that spans
21 countries with 70 million customers, and it is attracting outside investors again. But this
time around, companies in emerging markets are on the prowl, reflecting a new order in the mobile telecommunications industry. American companies, it seems, are taking a backseat to
upstart rivals overseas. |

| Analog design expertise is rare, valuable |
| Source:R. Colin Johnson, EETimes, May 27 2008 |
| http://www.eetimes.com |
|
An enduring shortage of analog engineers--that may be getting worse rather than better--is
requiring even digital chip powerhouses like Freescale Semiconductor Inc. (Austin, Texas) to
redouble their efforts to recruit and groom analog engineers in the "black art" of mixed-signal
processing. "Analog integrated chip design remains something of an art," said Gary Grandbois,
principal analyst for iSuppli's Analog ICs and Semiconductor Forecast. "Today, analog designers
have to be comfortable in both analog and digital design, a demanding task that makes these
designers rare, highly regarded and well paid." |

The World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS) group has cut its IC forecast by nearly half.
The global semiconductor market is expected to grow by 4.7 percent to $267.7 billion in 2008,
according to the WSTS. In 2007, the IC market grew 3.2 percent. The current projections have
been reduced by 4.4 percentage points compared to the forecast that WSTS issued in November
last year, ''mainly due to a weak fourth quarter 2007,'' according to the group. |

Dubai is prepping the Dubai Silicon Oasis (DSO), a multibillion- dollar project with the objective
of establishing the country as a leading center for electronics innovation, design and
development. The project is the brainchild of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, VP
and prime minister of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and ruler of Dubai, and is evolving
against a backdrop of rapid economic change and development for the emirate as it looks to
shift from an oil- and conspicuous-consumption-based economy to one known for educational
excellence and technological development. Oil now constitutes only 3 percent of the emirate's
GDP—vs. almost 70 percent for neighboring Abu Dhabi, the capital of the UAE—with tourism and
real estate claiming the bulk of Dubai's economy. As a result of the massive boom in
construction, 43 percent of the world's cranes now reside in Dubai, compared with 37 percent
in China. |

| US, Japan and Western Europe Continue to Lose Share of Global Electronics Production |
| Source: In-Stat, May 30 2008 |
|
|
Electronics manufacturing in the US, Japan and Western Europe accounted for under 50% of
electronics output for the first time in 2006 as the migration of volume manufacturing to low
cost locations continues, according to a recent report published by Reed Electronics Research
and distributed by In-Stat. Although the Asia-Pacific (and China in particular) has been the
main beneficiary, Central and Eastern Europe and Mexico and Brazil have also benefited from
significant inward investment. In the longer-term, many of today’s low-cost locations will also
offer significant market opportunities, creating the need for further investment in local
manufacturing. |
